The First Presbyterian Church of Kensington, the Stainglass Window Biographies

The group of biographies that are listed in the Encyclopaedia Kensingtoniana under the heading "1st Presbyterian Church of Kensington, Stainglass Window Biographies," were written by Kenneth W. Milano for a talk he gave on 23rd of March 2003, for the 189th Anniversity celebration of the First Presbyterian Church of Kensington. These biographies are examples of the sort of biographies I can write as part of my genealogical and historical research services business.

The family names of these biographies were all taken from the stainglass of First Prebsyterian Church of Kensington, located at 413 E. Girard Avenue, in the Fishtown/Kensington section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are 14 large stain glass windows and these individuals and families apparently are the ones that helped to pay for these windows of the church. Some are quite famous and some not so famous.

This congregation was officially organized on March 23, 1814 near Richmond & Palmer Streets. Until 1922 its steeple was a familiar marker from the river. After it blew down in a storm it was replaced with the familiar green dome. Famous Philadelphian architect John Sloan designed this building. The first pastor was G. Chandler, for whom Chandler School was named. Rev. Chandler was as well known in Fishtown/Kensington for his dedicated work during the yellow fever epidemic as was Saint John Newmann in the area around 5th & Girard Avenue. The church has beautiful stained glass windows. If you are facing east, the east wall has two window, the one on the left is to honor the Rev. Chandler, and the one on the right was donated by William Cramp of the Cramp Shipbuilding family. The others are lined along the north and south walls. If you get a chance to be in the area, you really should make an appointment to view these windows.
