Jacob Tees (1790-1875) - prominent shipbuilder and community activist. His shipyard at the foot of Marlborough Street, constructed nearly 200 vessels during its operations from 1826-1857. Like Samuel Bower, his reputation was so widespread, he was offered the position of chief naval constructor, in his case by the Turkish government. He served as a Commissioner of the old District of Kensington for many years, influential in the district's final consolidation into the City of Philadelphia in 1854. His most cherished role was as founder of the Kensington Soup Society.
