Located at the northwest corner of Frankford Avenue and Master Street, this watercolor painting from the mid 19th century, shows the original “City Hall” for Kensington when it was a self-governing district (1820 – 1854). In 1854, the whole of Philadelphia County was consolidated into the City of Philadelphia and thus Kensington lost its self-governing status and the building was taken over by Philadelphia's city government. This building was eventually demolished and a police station built in its place, which fronted on Front Street. Today only one structure survives from the police station days, an apparent old stable that was used by the city's water department. The structure that still survives has been converted into a residential living space and bicycle shop.
